Three Sweetly Healthy Chocolate Alternatives
Posted by Kate W on Monday, October 15th, 2012
This weekend was heavy on the sweets in our normally health food-oriented house. My daughter turned one this weekend, and I wanted her to have something truly amazing for her first taste of birthday cake. Unfortunately, she has a milk protein intolerance that makes it so that her system can’t handle dairy. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to make a nondairy cake that was both moist and delicious. Luckily, I stumbled upon a recipe for the most sumptuous vegan chocolate cupcakes, and another one for some luxuriously decadent non-dairy buttercream frosting. Everyone in my family agreed the resulting cakes were more delicious than any other cupcake they had ever had, non-dairy status notwithstanding. Unfortunately, just because they’re vegan, it doesn’t necessarily mean these cupcakes are healthy. They still have enough sugar to interfere with your sleep, just like Halloween candy. So unless we’re celebrating a special occasion, we’ll be getting our chocolate fix from these healthier sources:
I don’t always have time to plan out a healthy lunch for myself. More often than not, I make it through a busy morning of running errands, cleaning up the house, feeding my daughter, and getting some work done before I realize I haven’t had anything substantial to eat since breakfast. Invariably, I tend to realize this right before naptime. Rather than grab the first solid food I see and cram it in my mouth to get lunch over with ASAP, I’ve found it’s best to grab this meal replacement drink. I can quickly whisk two scoops of this whey protein concentrate into a glass of water, and sip on a nutritionally-balanced chocolate shake while I give my daughter her pre-nap bottle. It takes the edge off my hunger while giving me the nutrients I need, and still manages to feel like an indulgence.
I eat three meals a day if I’m lucky. My husband eats three meals by noon. He has breakfast of a bagel and banana in the car before work, then a midmorning snack of an oatmeal and yogurt parfait at his desk around 10:30. He follows that up with a hearty lunch an hour later. Even with all that, he’s still ravenous when he gets home at 6pm. So I have started to stick a functional food bar in his bag to snack on in the car on the way home. The sweet taste of chocolate makes him perk up, and the solid nutrition buys me a little more time to get dinner on the table before I have to deal with two cranky babies instead of one.
Sometime the smell of chocolate is all I need to satisfy a sweet craving. After I soak away the stress of a long day in a hot bath, I indulge my skin instead of my taste buds with this tantalizingly aromatic body butter. The blend of shea butter, virgin coconut oil, and cocoa butter is intensely moisturizing, and the intoxicating fair trade cocoa scent is as indulgent as any dessert.
