Chewable Vitamin C: Helping You Survive Cold and Flu Season

My poor daughter has been dealt an unfortunate hand. While you would be hard-pressed to find two parents more devoted to her health, happiness and comfort, there’s one thing we can’t provide her, even if we desperately want to: a good immune system. I have always been a little sickly; I can attribute a lot of this to the poor nutrition I received growing up. My husband on the other hand was always the picture of health. While I battled colds and bronchitis with the turn of each season, he barely ever even got the sniffles.
Then, one day about three and a half years ago, he complained of a little back pain. A trip to the walk-in clinic netted him some narcotic painkillers, but they didn’t even make a dent in his discomfort. After a few more days had passed, I cajoled him into going to the ER. There, they discovered that what he was experiencing was not back pain; his lungs were filled with fluid. They quickly admitted him to the ICU with double pneumonia.
It was a mystery how an otherwise healthy 25-year old man could wind up at death’s door in the space of under a week without even so much as a cough. After another two years of bouncing from specialist to specialist, we confirmed that he had lupus, and autoimmune disorder. Lupus is not necessarily genetic; no one else in my husband’s family has ever had it. But once it appears in a family it is more likely to reoccur in future generations, so my daughter is certainly at risk.
I do everything in my power though to keep her immune system strong. I exclusively breastfed until she was five months old, and would have gone longer if she hadn’t had begun losing weight on breast milk alone. I get her vaccinated on schedule. I make sure not to take her on play sates if the other kids are sick (though this is as much to protect my husband as it is her). And once she reaches an appropriate age, she’ll be taking chewable vitamin C supplements. These tasty honey-based supplements made of freeze dried oranges and orange pulp will help build her immune system and aid her in fighting off colds. In fact, as soon as this sneezing fit from my summer cold abates, I’ll be getting some for myself, too.
