Most people use their linen closet for, well, linens. I do keep my towels in there, as well as a few extra sheets sets and the tablecloths I bust out whenever I want to be fancy. But I whittle down my linens to the bare necessities so I have plenty of room to store my various slings, balms, and sports tape. It’s ironic, but I have more of these accoutrements now than I did when I played competitive tennis as a teenager fifteen years ago. Then I was young and spry and flexible. Now, I am rickety. Pregnancy has loosened my joints and ligaments and made me more prone to pain. Additionally, I suffer from a condition called hypermobility which makes me very prone to sprains and dislocated joints. It’s very common in talented athletes; the same looseness that made my tennis serve so deadly now causes me to dislocate my shoulder if I put on a jacket too vigorously.

You would think that I would have learned by now to take it easy when I am suffering from an injury. After fifteen years of constant aches and pains, I should be great at relaxing, right? Wrong. I am injured so frequently, that taking time to heal is supremely inconvenient. Plus, it’s not always possible to stop using my aching joints entirely. You try telling a crying baby who wants to be held that you’re too sore to pick her up. Carrying around twenty pounds of infant with a dislocated shoulder is a picnic compared to listening to her wail inconsolably.

But just because I can’t take to my bed on particularly sore days, it doesn’t mean I don’t take care of myself. If I change the car radio station too quickly and pop my shoulder out of joint, I ice it down, apply some eco-friendly pain relieving rub, and wrap it up with some Acti-Tape so I can ease my pain and more quickly reposition the joint the way it should be.  It also reminds me to at least attempt to limit my range of motion while I heal. It even comes in a range of fun colors so I can coordinate it with assorted outfits. Hey, my sense of style isn’t dislocated, you know.
