Avocados: Great For Eating And Wearing

Posted by on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

I have a friend who is obsessed with avocado. I have actually watched her dip sushi rolls that were already packed with avocado into guacamole for a snack. She credits her frequent avocado consumption with the gorgeous shiny hair and healthy glowing skin she has that I am so envious of. But while I am perfectly willing to slather avocado on my face and hair in an effort to replicate her natural beauty, I just can’t bring myself to eat it.

I know all the facts. Avocado is great for you. In fact, it is considered one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It is rather high in calories and fat; there are 250-300 calories and over 20 grams of fat in just one medium-sized avocado. But the fat is all monounsaturated which qualifies as a healthy fat, and it is also packed with almost 25 essential nutrients, including vitamins A,B, C, E and K as well as copper iron magnesium and phosphorous. One avocado also contains as much potassium as three bananas.

Even knowing all that, I can’t get over my aversion to the texture. I have mild obsessive compulsive disorder, and it often manifests itself in relationship to my food. None of my food can touch; especially juicy foods like the cranberry relish my Mom makes every Thanksgiving have to go on their own plate. Once I take one bite of something, I need to finish it before I move onto the next item. If I’m eating something like clams or mussels, the shells have to be stacked neatly to the side (one time it took me nearly two hours to eat a stuffed artichoke because my dad kept knocking over my leaf piles). And certain foods have a texture or aroma that causes me great anxiety, avocado and onions respectively being chief among them.

Avocados convey numerous health benefits; they help maintain heart health, they lower cholesterol, they control blood pressure and blood sugar levels, they have anti-inflammatory properties. The list goes on and on. Luckily, there are avocado supplements on the market so I can still get these beneifts without having to deal with the texture. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still take an order of guacamole; I’ll just be using it as hair conditioner instead.
