My daughter seemed exceptionally miserable as a baby. My husband and her doctor both assured me that sometimes babies just cry, but she seemed so angry and frustrated. I really was convinced there was something more serious going on. One day when she was two months old, she just wouldn’t stop crying no matter what I tried. Out of desperation, I took her to a meeting at a local nursing support group where the leader suggested I cut all dairy out of my diet so she wouldn’t get consume it when I fed her. It worked like a charm. Suddenly she was a happy, contented mellow baby who was able to sleep for longer stretches. I missed indulging in cookies and cakes, but filled my dairy-free void with scrumptious-smelling bubble bath.

Once we were done with nursing, we had to find a hypoallergenic formula for her sensitive system. We were successful in locating one that works, but boy is it expensive. Her doctor said that many babies outgrow dairy sensitivities around nine months of age, and suggested we introduce some dairy to see how she took to it. I was wary, but finally gave in after my husband pointed out we could save $150/month in formula costs if we could switch to one with dairy components. We slowly introduced some Greek yogurt with her fruit puree one morning and she gobbled it up with no side effects. We thought we were out of the woods, until four days later when she developed major diaper rash and digestive issues, which indicated she wasn’t out of the woods when it came to her dairy sensitivity yet.

I felt incredibly guilty for reintroducing dairy too soon when it had clearly made my daughter miserable. For two days, she screamed bloody murder through every diaper change. Luckily I had a soothing, herbal bottom balm on hand to help calm her diaper rash. After a few days of bland foods, plenty of cool baths, and generous applications of diaper rash ointment, she was on the mend. Most babies outgrow dairy protein allergies at some point, so I’m sure one day we will be snacking on cookies together. But in the meantime, I’ll be experimenting with dairy-free cake recipes for her rapidly-approaching first birthday.
